BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT UNIT Achievements and
Future Plans
2003-2004 The Business Development Unit
delivered a short course in December as part of a
strategic management training programme for the
Council for Awards in Children's Care and
Education. The focus of the course was on linking
mission, vision and values to strategy and operational
planning.
Several courses have been run for external
organisations as part of the recently developed
Postgraduate Certificate in Management programme:
- Numerous short course sessions were presented on
project management for the London Borough of Islington
managers.
- Several sessions on accounting and finance were
laid on for the London Borough of Islington managers.
- The Unit has also managed to rope in Melvyn Keen,
the University's Assistant Vice-Chancellor, into
delivering a number of courses on contract management
and procurement. (Melyvn head's up the University's
commercial operations, including oversight of MUI, and
so is leading by example.)
The Group has contributed to the delivery of a short
course on management consulting in Hong Kong on the MA
Work-based learning programme.
A cohort of approximately 30 people have been
enrolled on the latest cohort of the Advanced Diploma in
Personal and Business Effectiveness programme, through
European funding, which was delivered over at the Lea
Valley Technopark. Internships will be organised to help
the participants gain the experience and skills they
need to get them back into work.
The Business Development Unit in collaboration with
an external marketing consultant took on a strategic
marketing and coaching contract for the Council for
Children's Care and Education (CACHE). This involves a
10-day unaccredited strategic marketing training
programme for the senior management team and a 9-day
coaching programme for the CEO and Deputy CEO. Initial
feedback has been very positive for the first phase of
the programme.
MUBS Runs Short Courses in Bucharest, Romania,
covering strategy, marketing and HRM topics in a joint
collaborative management development programme with OK
Service Corporation, Romania's No2 training provider.
What is particularly satisfying about the programme is
that so far feedback reports are excellent from our
Romanian middle and senior manager participants, who
were taught in cohorts of around 20 in English with all
discussions simultaneously translated into Romanian.
2002-2003 The Business Development Unit
over the course of the last year has been the principal
organiser for a number of projects. It has also been a
secondary organiser to a number of other projects but
these are not outlined further as they require minimal
input from us. Projects are outlined with contract
value, where the project is privately-funded and total
project value where it is publicly-funded (this includes
matched funding from MU), with an estimated time
commitment and role required from the Director of
Business Development (DoBD):
| 1. The Graduates into Business
Programme |
| MUBS and external staff will teach four
cohorts, each of around 30 students, on the
Advanced Diploma in Personal and Business
Effectiveness programme (under validation), under
the programme leadership of Simon Roberts, as part
of an public-funded programme.
|
| 2. The Islington Management
Development Programme |
| MUBS and external staff will deliver
short courses for 3 cohorts of managers (45 in
total) before September and for a further 2
cohorts before January 2004, on an innovative -
because it adopts WBL principles - specially
customised (still to be validated) Postgraduate
Certificate in Management programme under the
leadership of Doirean Wilson, who co-ordinates
tutor-participant liaison, and other
programme-related issues (with 10 hours per week
assistance from Caroline Kiengo). For further
information see the Islington
Web site. |
| 3. The Romanian Training Programme
|
| MUBS and external staff have delivered a
series of short courses at Thistle Hotel, Marble
Arch and will deliver 7 short courses in Bucharest
Romania on a non-accredited management development
programme between May-June 03.
|
| 4. E-procurement project |
| The MUBS BDU has been the principal
co-ordinator since the inception of this project,
although was not involved in the original bid
development. The project has limited immediate,
and financial, value to MUBS and has suffered from
partnership problems in developing the required
technical solutions for an online trading system,
however, it has long term potential benefit in
increasing The University's reputation with (160)
local businesses within the Lee Valley area, who
benefit from having a free website and free
membership of a trading system with an existing
10,000 members. For further details, visit the e-procurement Web
site. |
| Internal Short Course Programmes
|
| The BDU has will have organised 3 short
courses this semester on project management,
negotiation skills and time management for MUBS
and MU staff using external tutors. |
| The 6th Annual Political Marketing
Conference |
| This was held between the 18-20th
September (at Thistle Hotel Islington and The
House of Commons) for a some 80 attendees, with
sponsorship from the Graduate School of Political
Management at George Washington University, and
the Academy of Marketing. |
2003-2004 The following CPD programmes
will continue:
- The Graduates into Business Programme
- Islington Management Development programme
- Romanian Training Programme
The following public and private funded projects will
also continue:
- The e-procurement project
- The status of the MA HRM DL programme is uncertain
as are its HR requirements.
In addition, we intend to deliver and support the
following conferences:
- The Academy of Marketing Conference 2006 with a
prospective 500 participants, design and development
work to begin three years prior to conference date
through liaison with Academy of Marketing executive
committee.
- Other conferences as they arise (e.g. Leadership
Conference with HSSc and PDE) to take advantage of
MUI's creation of a conference unit (under Steve Lane
of MUeX and Denise Arden, Marketing Manager, MUI).
The BDU will also submit bids for a minimum of six
tender exercises (for contracts worth approximately
£300k in total) with the intention of obtaining at least
one of them.
